This ain't no fanny pack...

...it's a waist belt organizer!

It is no secret that I am what people call a "gear head" and it is a name I wear proudly...most of the time. In this day and age where technology is constantly being improved by leaps and bounds one can only struggle to stay afloat in the sea of innovation. Like Data in the Goonies (the fact that he is also Asian is mere coincidence) I am constantly at throws with making technology work for me rather than be at the mercy of it.

Life as a Peace Corps Zambia volunteer require certain tools and when you are constantly on the move and countless hours are spent in transport you have to carry just a few things. Here is what I carry in what has been likened to a "murse" (man-purse). Laugh all you want, but this is my gear and I take gear seriously.

The list (clock-wise from top left):
  • head phone splitter (share music!)
  • spare head phones
  • UE Superfi 5vi Noise isolating earphones (amazing!)
  • mefloquin ( malaria = bad )
  • ear plugs + spare ear tips
  • usb car cigarette lighter adapter
  • usb wall charger
  • ipod cable
  • string
  • note pad
  • ipod touch
  • x-mini II speakers (amazing!)
  • moleskine mini file organizer
  • peace corps passport
  • Zambia work permit
  • 60 GB ipod video
  • wine opener
  • nail clippers
  • chapstick
  • BIC lighter
  • 8 GB Corsair "survivor" jump drive (waterproof, shockproof, what?)

This is Exped's waist belt organizer. A great organizer. It has stow away waist straps and the zip tabs are glow in the dark (genius!). Here's another look at the organizer from their blog.

Note: I managed to purchase a few of Exped's gear before I left country and have been using it for about 7 months now. It is a great company and the gear is top quality. I'll be posting about their gear in the coming future.

update (March 1, 2011):

At first glance, Exped's waist belt organizer looks like any other organizer. However, after consistent use for the past 7 months I have to concede that this isn't just another organizer. For the person on the go, this is THE bag. It holds pretty much everything you'll ever need for life on the road. The pockets are well thought out and it's as if each and every item that you've got there's a pocket that'll fit it perfectly.

Things I love:

Glow in the dark zipper tabs
Hide away straps
a pocket for everything
feels "solid"

Things I don't like:

I carry too much stuff.

Below are more pictures:

Hide away straps.

Hide away straps... hidden.

Another look at all my goodies in the bag.

  1. Ton, I'm so proud of you. You're packing light now, but still sticking to your guns as a gear head.

  2. I'm going to be that guy that says that a gear head is someone who likes cars and engines and stuff, and that you sir, are a gear whore. And by that I mean that you have an acute sense of when added details are useful and when they're not. Thanks for the reviews! -That guy
